when mitt romney beat president obama in last night's televised debate. so the first televised presidential debate that we had was in 1960. here are all of the other years that we have since have televised presidential debates. every four years now we have these debates on tv. the only years, though, so these are all the years, right, right? the only years, though, in which you had an incumbent president running against a challenger in all of the years we've had presidential debates on tv are these years. so in terms of understanding the historical context of what happened last night when mitt romney beat president obama in this first debate, this is the universe of like things to compare it to. this is how to understand it in terms of american political history. it's only these years right here. that's it. now, by definition, you never have an incumbent president in this situation more than once. presidents can only serve two terms so there's only one opportunity when they carry into that debate, when they're running for re-election, they carry into that

prep, john kerry once again played mitt romney in debate prep. did he have to adjust his performance at all based on what he saw mitt romney do in the first debate? >> well, i mean, look. obviously, we've gamed out different scenarios like mitt romney suggesting he doesn't have a $5 trillion tax plan or suggesting he's got a health care plan that covers pre-existing conditions. all of which we know, and knew that weren't true. and look, if all we did was try to keep mitt romney from walking away from his positions and keeping him honest tonight, it would be a full-time job, but it's part of what the president will do. >> i want to talk to you as someone who used to work in the white house, as you did. there's no one i know who has worked with the president in the white house thinks that presidential debates reveal presidential skills. presidential debates reward memorization, which is utterly meaningless in the presidency. it rewards your ability to make a statement without consulting anyone else. presidents are never without their staff and cabi

. 31% expect mitt romney to win the debate. and presumably that expectation will color the way those viewers watch that debate. >> yeah. it could. i mean, maybe this is the one risk maybe the biggest risk for the obama campaign that if the bar is set that high, if there's sort of an even match, if romney kind of holds his own, isn't clearly blown out of the water or anything like that, that people say he exceeded expectations. so what looked like a draw ends up being interpreted by the viewers or the media, or if the media is looking to sell the horse race angles, maybe they start portraying the draw as a romney win. the expectations for his performance were so low, kennedy outdebated romney but the effect of that was mogfied because the expectations were so low. that might be the biggest risk here for the obama people that the expectations of the voters and probably the press too that obama will win. so maybe nothing short of a clear win can be a little problematic for them. >> let's consider what some conservatives are saying

there's problems with the way romney went through that debate. looked good but didn't exactly convey a lot of truth. your thoughts? >> that's exactly what democrats are saying. paul ryan was out today and says that he expects for the next month he's going to hear from the obama campaign that they are liars and you hear liberals picking up on that. again, to go to this point about "saturday night live," i think it underscores what people already saw from that debate, which is that president obama turned in a very poor performance. i thought that he would have been smart to go on to "saturday night live" and sort of lampoon himself. we saw him do that out west. i guess the "saturday night live" folks reached out to him and they both declined. i think it has been a right of passage in elections, going back to 2008 when mccain was on, obama was on, hillary clinton was on and sarah palin, too. it is part of our political discourse. it reinforces the narratives. i think "snl" has had problems portraying obama. they switched to a new guy. jay ferrel see

governor romney is a good debater. i'm just okay. >> we know both sides are playing this au shuck, i'm just okay. i don't know how i going to perform. the president -- >> he's just the president. >> he's been working very hard. he may not be rehearsing zingers but we know, for example, just on the tax loophole question, that paul ryan stumbled and stammered through when on fox news yesterday, there are openings available but the problem, at least that we're hearing, chris, from the obama team, is they're worried his answers will be too long and not crisp and concise. >> well, you know, having watched the president both when he was a candidate for president and as a candidate in the primaries, he's -- he has a tendency to filibuster his answers and kind of -- they kind of meander. i think his debate team is advising correctly to keep things focused and tight if you have a debate format where there's no time limits. the bigger question here is, if the romney campaign is truly focused on zingers, this could be be a debacl
